HOW TO REMAIN ENERGIZED ALL DAY
by Steve Reed
Fishing can take up to 6000 calories out of you during the day; that is the equivalent of running a half marathon for most people. Who would have believed that right?
To keep calories in your body you should eat approximately 1/3 of the calories lost, this formula will also keep you from getting drowsy from the food. Here are some tips on what to eat:
Before Fishing
- Eggs- Great source of protein, eat the eggwhites to be even healthier. 3 or 4 is the recommended number.
- Toast or Cereal with whole grain. No more than about the size of your fist.
- Fruit- the natural sugars are a good energy.
Do not eat greasy foods as they will weigh you down and make you drowsy.
While Fishing
- Hydration- Drink a sports nutrition drink like gatorade... and drink water the rest of the day.
- Sit down and eat an actual small meal. Do not stand and fish while eating. It may make some anglers nervous but it is absolutely the best thing you can do.
- Try eating the right proportions. 1/3 protein, 1/3 carbs, and 1/3 fruit.
Do not drink more than one caffeinated drink and do not rush your eating.
After Fishing
- Eat a regular meal, but do not eat a huge meal. You should have eaten well enough all day that you do not need to.
- Drink a protein shake.
- Eat carbohydrates that are light weight.
Do not eat big meals, they are horrible for you late at night.
Other Tricks
- Sleep 8 hours. If possible try and get 8 hours of sleep. This is my biggest problem, nerves and excitement always get to me.
- Take vitamins, especially vitamin b.
- Drink Tea instead of coffee. Make sure to get it with ginseng.
- Get raw ginseng and put it in your mouth like some would tabacco. It improves concentration and energy but does not have the dangerous side effects of tobacco.
- Stay positive on the water. Negativity will absolutely drain your energy. Nothing is stronger than the human will, and many times you can keep yourself energized just from mental aspects of fishing. If you aren't enjoying yourself you will become stressed, stress burns more calories on top of your fishing and causes fatigue.
These are some of the things I have picked up. I'm a huge red bull guy myself and have more then once leaned on that to keep me awake all day. Red Bull or coffee is good for a short burst of energy. Like an hour or two but do not substitute it for food and limit it to one drink a day.
